It was a two day camp highlighted with the presence of Former Houston Rockets guard Aaron Brooks. This was not Brooks first visit to Brownsville, he was at the UTB Rek Center two summer's ago coming off a stellar NBA season where he was named the 2010 most improved player. This time around Brooks is no longer part of the Rocket organization. He was a member of the Phoenix Suns back court before he took his talents to China during last season's NBA lockout. Now Brooks is a free agent after being released from the Suns earlier this summer. He has visited with Rockets front office and would not be surprising if he gets signed by an NBA team on July 11 which is signing day for all free agents. Gonzalo "G" Garza Jr. who is a professor at UT-Brownsville was the camp director. Garza has ties with the Rockets/Vipers after being on the coaching staff in Hidalgo last season. Garza is the founder of SUCCESS basketball and a Skills Trainer for Global Sports Integration (Run The Walk).
Forty campers experienced and learned dribbling and shooting drills through out the two day camp. They worked on eye/hand coordination using a tennis ball and balloons on dribbling drills. The campers also competed in shootout competitions with the winners squaring up versus Brooks. Jorge De La Garza a sophomore at Brownsville St. Joseph Academy pulled out a win against Brooks.
